Aussies Sell Sand to Saudi
Austrade media release
16 May 2007
Selling ice to Eskimos may seem a long shot but that’s a small challenge when you consider the ingenious Aussies selling sand to the desert nation of Saudi Arabia - with their next shipment due out later this month.
Austrade’s Senior Trade Commissioner for Saudi, Garry Kennedy, said that the GMA Garnet Group was a good example of an Australian company using its point of difference effectively in an area that is embracing Australian products.
“Australian exports to the region have more than tripled since 1991 from $1.7 billion to $5.6 billion, and are continuing to grow,” said Mr Kennedy.
“There are great opportunities for exporters from a diverse range of industries in the Middle East and North Africa. Today, there are almost 3000 Australian exporters doing business with the Gulf States, with over 1400 Australian businesses exporting to the UAE alone.
GMA Garnet’s Group Managing Director, Torsten Ketelsen, said GMA have had great success in the Middle East and are about to send the next shipment of their alluvial Garnet sand (heavy mineral sand) to Saudi for use in the sandblast industry.
“The Australian garnet sand that we are exporting has unique characteristics including very high hardness and durability which is perfect as an industrial abrasive and for ultra-high pressure waterjet cutting applications,” said Mr Ketelsen.
“It is also free of silica which has important human resources implications- normal sand consists almost entirely of silica. Silica creates dust during blasting impact which can cause lung cancer/silicosis, a deadly and incurable disease.
“We are also very mindful of the environmental issues and follow strict guidelines to restore the mined area to its original state. We work to ensure the areas mined and restored by GMA are generally greatly improved compared to their original state. We also operate industrial recycling/reprocessing plants in the Middle East and Europe where used Garnet sand is collected after use and re-processed.
“Austrade’s local presence in the area has been very instrumental, particularly so in the very early stages of our market development in providing market intelligence and contacts. Austrade has been very supportive and actively involved in the inauguration of our bulk handling and re-processing plants in Jebel Ali and recently in Jubail (Saudi).
Mr Kennedy said Australian businesses interested in taking advantage of the opportunities in the region should attend Austrade’s Winning Business in the Middle East and North Africa free seminar series, from 15 to 24 May 2007.
“There are so many opportunities in this region for example, in Bahrain, the city state has become a centre for off shore banking; Qatar is developing its extensive gas reserves; Oman is concentrating on infrastructure, distribution and tourism; whilst Saudi Arabia is investing in light manufacturing and services,” Mr Kennedy said.
“Of course, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the best example of a transforming economy in the region, with Dubai now a major centre for tourism, education, financial and trade services.”
